Aquarium furniture – what can I not?

My residence catfish get territorial about their favorite hidey-holes, so I need something more to offer. Fishy business charge the earth for those big enough for my fish not so stuck in I need to be creative. I have a selection of pots Vases and throbbing in my closet that would satisfactorily cavities completely, but I'm not sure what materials are used safely (such as metal, earthenware, Ceramic fired?) Also, how would I go about sterilizing them?

unpainted ceramics and glass is in order. i wouldnt use that has ceramic glaze or color on them. and stay away from metal. I have found that PVC tubes, aquarium sealant and gravel excellent opportunity to make caves of all sizes are! add Just the sealant on the pipe (you could probably do it with the ceramic too!) And roll them into the gravel color of your choice makes it look like your natural Caves and hiding places in your aquarium.
