Blue Mountain History

Blue Mountain alpine ski resort was founded in 1941 by Jozo Weider and Peter Campbell. Jozo Weider and his family emigrated to Canada Hungary at the beginning of World War II. He was a landlord, a mountain guide and photographer. After they immigrated, he was a ski instructor in Quebec, where he worked with a developer named Peter Campbell and the two partnered for Blue Mountain.

Jozo Weider his family moved to the foot of the mountain and supports them with agriculture in the Summer months and work on ski hill in winter. The three original tracks were to be deleted manually. They were shot, grandmother, and called Kandahar. The elevator consists of two slides, which were drawn on the hill by a cable and the cable was powered by a truck engine.

Milestones

1948: An agreement was signed with the Toronto Ski Club signs for the 999-year lease for the use of their huts. Weider also bought an additional 150-acre and then opened a new ski area called Apple Bowl.

In the development of the ski hill, Jozo Weider had noticed that the ground was mostly clay. As Hobby, he started with ceramic clay. This was finally a new business model called Blue Mountain Pottery.

1960's: with improvements in the ski equipment and the economy, skiing became a major sport in Ontario. As a result of increased business volume a twenty-room inn was opened.

1966: Blue Mountain Pottery Weider sold to fund another major expansion at Blue Mountain. Three double chairlifts were installed and a new cottage called Central Base Lodge opened.

1971: Jozo Weider died before the expansion project was completed. His son took, George Weider control of the business. Later George was handed over to Chairman and responsibility for the daily management of the resort to Jozo's son-in-law, Gordon Canning.

1973: A ski rental and repair facility opened, and a large snowmaking system was installed.

The business bought Georgian Peaks Club, a smaller ski club was northwest of Blue Mountain. It has the highest altitude difference in Ontario and is for advanced skiers. This project was not successful businesses and the summits again in a private ski club in 1987.

1981: The Blue Mountain Inn opened accommodate the ever increasing amount of tourists.

1984: A subway ride was added to existing activities in the summer water.

1988: The Central Base Lodge and South Base Lodge has been renovated.

1997: The Tube Ride was replaced with an improved water ride called Raft Rider.

1999: The Blue Mountain Slide Ride was closed for good.

Important changes

1999 was the year, Intrawest Corporation 50% of the shares of Blue Mountain Resort purchased. As a result of this purchase, began an important enlargement process.

With Intrawest Corporation in the image, the Blue Mountain Resort expanded to include:

Four high-speed six-person chair lift was built to eliminate the traffic jams at the lifts.

Blue Mountain Village was built with Intrawest signature European flair. The village consists of residential buildings, hotels, conference center, restaurants, shops and many other services.

Mountain biking in the hills open during the summer months and a climbing wall, hiking trails, private beach, a water park and a golf course.
