What material should I use a hand-cast of a child?

I want my niece casts of his hands and then paint them and have them and they have bombarded local "Paint Your Own Craft Business. I called the store and the woman I spoke to said they fired all their pieces to 6 I 'm not familiar with pottery kilns and I do not know what kind of clay / Plaster withstand 6 can to get fired. I want this to be cast a good-looking do not just your normal "Clean-o-Paris" painted print. I need to know to use which kind of material. I also welcome all other nice ideas! Thank you!
