Collecting stamps and when is enough enough
In The Beginning …
For over 40 years I have collected and my passion started with my mother, who had an antique shop in our home. I collected boxes, copper products, snow globes, African Art, Native American Art and most recently little Spelter souvenir buildings.
If you are a collector, you have always been a collector. Our collections can change over time and how we leave a collection in search of the next, we still have our eyes in the rearview mirror windows in search of additions to the collections we left behind. But the age old question always was, when a collection is complete and as we know it.
Like any type of collection is on that one "Holy Grail", you know what I mean … that a piece that, if tomorrow you could die a "happy camper". My latest Holy Grail was to find an authentic 1930 Chrysler Building souvenir. I could not find all the States of the empire, Eiffel Towers and yes a lot of repro World Trade Center, but the Epitome of Art Deco architecture, the Chrysler Building was not found. Ever antique shop, flea market, garage sale I went to have my high and low, in the hope that this small shiny silver "Spire" is poking from under the plastic dolls would be broken Tonka trucks and dirty linen … but it was not be. I tried eBay, after their TV ad shows hundreds of rare vintage Corvettes all on one street and I though I will certainly be there again no luck. Well, I basically gave up and realized the amount of time I was something that had alluded me for over 8 years apparently my luck was for the experience, surrounded by some pretty neat things other expenses.
I moved on, I began looking for 19C. Staffordshire Potteries in Mulberry Transfer product and had my latest passion. I was particularly, but I still had my fascination with architecture, I wanted to historical buildings and ruins with oriental or Asian Greco Roman Detailing. So far I have not yet found my "Holy Grail" for this collection, but with time I'm sure it will be his "ugly & delicious head increase.
Now years have passed since my Chrysler Building search and I had really given up hope of ever my own. I were seen in a home magazine with some celebrity not entirely out of puberty and all I could think was "Did she really know what they had?" I really doubted.
In the end …
It has over twelve years ago since I was in the search "on hold" for the elusive Chrysler Building and I go every day by thinking about other things such as bird houses, water colors, and more. Last week, a friend I known for years, called me and said to "watch my mailbox. She took the box I have literally run every time the mail lady leaves by low and, behold, a small brown cardboard box arrived today. I opened it, and you guessed it … there it was. It was not only accurate from the Chrysler Building right in the correct time frame Spelter Material, but stamped on their base in raised letters because it was "Chrysler Building in 1930 The world's tallest building. Wow … This was not just the "Holy Grail "but the Holy Grail tenfold, as it was only 11 months later that the Empire State Building surpassed it in height.
Now you have it … my "Holy Grail" story has a happy ending and it really is my hope that all of your "holy grail" hunts the end.
